Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by John R — 07 Sep 2009
At this point, it's kind of difficult to describe how I feel about this film. Stacked up against many of the other Italian gore/exploitation movies I've seen, this was amongst the best in terms of quality and coherence, strange as it is to admit.
Maybe it was my perception, but the actual act of cannibalism seems to be somewhat of an afterthought. Depending on one's perspective, there are two ways in which to interpret "Cannibal Holocaust".
I can clearly see this as a go-for-broke exploitation film, stacked to the hilt with truly offensive content of all stripes. Pick your offensive poison and it's probably somewhere here. On the other hand, I viewed it as a striking comparison/contrast between two cultures, albeit done through the lens of a grindhouse film.
The animal cruelty is not something I recommend. Beyond that, the anticipation seems to be heightened more than the actual film itself, especially once you reach the final 10 minutes. As violent as the end may be, it can be argued that it is not all undeserved.
