Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Jalley O — 06 Apr 2010
In HORROR HOLOCAUST (Fantaco Press 1986), Chas. Balun said CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST is racist; what he said bothered me because its not clear who the movie's being racist towards.
CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (like AVATAR) describes racism but the film is not inherently racist.
As I recall, sleazy journalists go into "THE GREEN INFERNO" to make a documentary on "cannibals" when the cannibals are kind of docile and non-combative, the journalists start provoking the cannibals into being ferocious and cannibalistic.
The brutality of humankind causes brutality to manifest in other humans and various lifeforms.
: rac·ism.
Pronunciation: \ˈrā-ˌsi-zəm also -ˌshi-\.
Function: noun.
Date: 1933.
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination.
- rac·ist \-sist also -shist\ noun or adjective.
It seems that CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST is saying that bad behavior is usually provoked in other people by people with ulterior motives.
The sleazy journalists went into the AMAZON JUNGLE aka THE GREEN INFERNO expecting to find cannibals . . . and then when the cannibals weren't cannibals, the invading journalists made them into cannibals by being jerks to them;.
A little like what happens in CANNIBAL FEROX--the girl goes into the AMAZON to complete a doctoral dissertation on cannibalism and finds that the mean-spirited people she meets in the jungle actually committed atrocities against the cannibals that caused the cannibals to attack the humans.
