Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Paul J — 24 Oct 2010
Here's the film that changed movie history. The censors came down hard after this film was released. Everything changed and horror films were never the same again. It's hard to imagine the impact this film made upon its release.
The director, Deodato was thrown in jail because of this crazy movie. The actors feared for their lives during the making. Modern successes like Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity owe everything to this original nasty.
The level of realism and authenticity is frightening. In particular the animal killings. For once, it's understandable why this film was banned. For horror fans, this is essential viewing. It epitomizes a certain type of exploitation film that has made an indelible impression on the industry.
For better or worse? You decide. At the very least, its approach was very ahead of its time. Strangely, the score is extremely beautiful. There's also a very strong metaphor with the Vietnam war here.
The film condemns exploitation, yet clearly embraces it as well. All I know is, they don't make movies this dangerous anymore.
