Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Tiberius C — 24 Jun 2011
Pretty much a perfect horror movie filled with outrageous imagery. Delirious and offensive... they don't make them like this anymore. Be warned: If you're a PETA member, you'll choke on your tofu.
Carrying what is probably a phoney and cheesy moral message (Who are the real savages in this world?? Pray tell!), the movie cannot hide its misanthropy and cyniscism. People are skewered via anus on stakes, gang raped, babies are torn from bellies, and so on and so forth.
And all to a haunting score. There was a slew of these Italian-produced movies in the 70s, early 80s and most are dismal slogs. Cannibal Holocaust is a movie where all the elements came together in alchemic mayhem (kind of the way that Apocalypse Now did) to create the ideal viewing experience for shock/horror enthusiasts.
