As unpleasant as this might be in parts it is evident just how influential this was not only on the 80's video nasties market but the more recent verite style horror films from Blair Witch to (Rec) to Cloverfield and so on.

Add to that the folklore that surrounds the critical and social response to the film and the investigations into Deodato himself and Cannibal Holocaust becomes a myth which outstrips the relatively modest achievements of the picture itself.
