Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Paris S — 08 Nov 2011
This film is so graphic and unrelenting it makes my mortuary tenure look like a day at Pee Wee's playhouse. Would I recommend Cannibal Holocaust to anyone? Absolutely not, not even to my fellow horror hounds. It doesn't get any worse than this, and that's one hell of an accomplishment.
As a gore film, I suppose its the cream of the crop, so in a sense, its got a certain appeal. You don't really need me to speculate on the social commentary element (which, trust me, you're not going to find anything strikingly witty here), and some praise it for being as uncompromising as any film could ever hope to be. Personally, I thought Cannibal played like an ultra violent exploitation film, and about as close to snuff as you're ever going to get. If you're in the mood for Italian exploitation, look up Leonara Fani or any of the other attractive actresses from that period of film making. I just can't recommend this film to anyone, not even for people looking for a gross out. This film doesn't just snarl and whine, it bites.
Pro tip: Don't eat lasagna before watching a helpless sea turtle getting pried open.
