Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Jonathan L — 28 Nov 2011
Although many have criticized Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust as pushing the boundaries in respect to the filming of live animal killings, each shockingly realistic scene plays a role in the social commentary that makes the foundation of the movie.
The purpose of such a film is arguably to compare the barbarianism of a cannibalistic tribe to the "civilized" first-world cultures, and it does so brilliantly, albeit, horrifically. The message of this film gets lost on many, however, what differentiates this film from something such as Salo, is that it maintains its theme and message throughout, brilliantly finishing off with the line; "Who here, is the cannibal?" as the camera pans up to the modern corporate skylines.
