Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Freddie F — 07 Apr 2012
I took me years to finally watch this whole film and formulate an opinion on it. I didn't make it through my first time, the turtle scene forced me to stop. I can not explain how profoundly disturbed I was when I first encountered it.
Now, I have finally seen it in entirety and I have to attest to both its excellence and how ultimately disturbing it is. The social commentary is well-handled and intelligent. The special effects are outstandingly shocking. The music is beyond fantastic. As I write this my stomach feels awful. Its all twisted up from the experience.
I find that I keep rethinking and reconsidering it. I have a hard time rating this one. Surely its one of the most painful film experiences one can go through, but it is also majestic, beautiful and of the highest quality of horror/ exploitation films.
Well done, but not for the faint of heart. It rocks your foundations to the core.
