Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Ad V — 25 Aug 2012
Meh. A lot of meh this weekend. Maybe it's the Valium?
The first bit of this movie I was all "Why is this movie so controversial?" but then it got to the first rape scene and I was all "Ooook got it." Then it keeps getting worse. It's supposed to be a film about exploitation, but it just ends up feeling very exploitative. It's difficult to pull that kind of thing off. In my opinion when you're trying to deal with that kind of subject matter, you have to dial back the gore a bit, or else your film ends up becoming the very thing you're trying to criticize.
Also, animal lovers be warned: there's almost as much animal carnage as human in this film, and it's all for real. The director claimed that all animals killed for the movie were eaten by the natives, but still. Not cool.
