Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Nicole R — 28 Sep 2012
Well, I've finally seen it--one of the most infamous films of the Italian "cannibal" genre. Decades before "The Blair Witch Project" as another "documentary filmmakers who meet a very nasty end" film made us nauseated through jerky camerawork, "Cannibal Holocaust" manages to do it the old-fashioned way--through gory excess combined with a certain gritty, low-budget look and nihilistic tone to produce a genuinely disconcerting film experience.
There's nothing subtle about it, but the film does have some things to say about the voracious media culture in which we exist. By the way, animal lovers are advised to steer well away from this one.
Several scenes show real animals killed on-screen.
