Review of Candyman (2021) by Edelgardvonhres — 18 Sep 2021
A phenomenal film by writer director Nia DaCosta in her second directorial role, and a wonderful commentary on the society of today. Candyman (2021) is a direct sequel to the original film, deciding to focus it's story on another tragic figure that bears the name of Candyman.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays the role of Anthony McCoy, a struggling artist looking for his next big inspiration which he finds in the legend of Candyman. His performance is wonderfully executed and he puts a thorough amount of passion into the role and makes it stand out as a good enough contender to Virginia Madsen's role as Helen Lyle in the original.
The story, while slow to start, speaks volumes and is masterfully told through brilliant scenes and direction. I highly recommend this movie, even if it isn't a masterpiece it is certainly a horror sequel worth watching, especially if you adore the themes and message of what Candyman truly represents, and I hope you enjoyed this movie and it's message just as much as I did.
