Review of Candyman (1992) by Danny R — 23 Apr 2010
An chilling surreal, gut-wrenching horror film, about a graduate student Helen Lyle, played by Viirginia Madsen in a terrific performance whose research into modern folklore summons the spirit of a mysterious dead slave with a hook hand named Candyman,Tony Todd who's eerie and powerful performance is the stuff that nightmare are made of, is unforgettable, Todd so dominates this film that his presence is felt throughout it, even when he is not on the screen.
Helen heads for Chicago's notorious crime-infested Cabrini-Green public housing project the site of a brutal murder. Where she hears that the Candyman haunts, Helen does not believe in superstition and ignores the warnings of people who live in the area, and calls out is name five times in front of a mirror, which is according to legend is the way to summon him.
To her horror he appears igniting a series of gruesome murders, to which Helen is charged with the grisly crimes. People are being killed all around her by the Candyman and no one believes her innocents.
Effectively unnerving and suspenseful with some clever touches. A fine spooky score by Phillip Glass and superb direction by Bernard Rose. Highly Recommended.
