Review of Candyman (1992) by Joe J — 17 May 2012
Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) is conducting a thesis project on urban legends, and learns about the legend of Candyman - a former slave who was murdered in the early 1800s who appear to people after they say his name five times in the mirror and kills them with a hook that he has for a right hand. Not believing in the legend, Helen recklessly researches in the inner city projects of Cabrini-Green, and all too late realizes that Candyman (Tony Todd) is alive and well - and wants to make his legend known with Helen at his side.
Clive Barker (the genius behind Pinhead) delivers another knockout horror film experience with Candyman. Like Pinhead, Candyman is a struggling character - one that's even considered a tragic hero. He's looking to leave his legacy, and find the true love that was taken from him when he was human. Madsen & Todd deliver impeccable performances in a horror film that's more than just horror - it's downright dramatic.
