Review of Candyman (1992) by Chad H — 05 Oct 2013
Candyman is a seemingly underrated gem of 90s horror, its imdb rating is currently a mere 6.5. It is rich with racial and social subtext but it also says a lot about urban legends and the effect they can have.
A lot of the mythology within the film has seeped through the celluloid and has become such legend in the real world. For example does calling his name 5 times actually summon the Candyman? The pacing is careful while the score lends a grandeur that matches the presence and articulate nature of the films 'monster'.
Much like classic film monsters such as Frankenstein, Candyman is a tragic figure, not necessarily hell-bent on revenge like Freddy Krueger, but a victim of a terrible injustice. Ultimately one with more noble aspirations, despite however distorted they may be.
