Review of Canadian Bacon (1995) by Ali S — 03 May 2008
It's nice to see that Michael Moore has learned his lession - that Comedy is clearly not his genre. Stick to docs, Mikey!
For the longest time, I felt that this film was a glaring hole in my film repertoire. So, I was excited to finally sit down and watch it. And then it sucked.
I mean, it wasn't the worst movie in the world. I had a few chuckles. But it was horribly dated, I seldom laughed or even giggled, and the plot....oh that horrible plot. I get what Moore was trying to do and I even appreciate it. It certainly does make a solid point about the way that America operates. However, as a Canadian, I felt he had so much material to work with, so many of our quirks and general hilarity. Why didn't he use any of it besides the repeated use of the word "canuck" and the obvious hockey references?
Michael Moore is one of my favourite filmmakers. He did not lose any cred with me because of this minor mishap. He learned his lesson and we are all thankful. Especially Canadians....and bacon.
