Review of Cam (2018) by Rosanna M — 18 Nov 2018
While Cam has an interesting premise, it never delivers in any direction it wanders into. I get that the critics reviews are glowing due to someone's suggestion that it's "female empowering" but that's only in the most superficial manner of Alice's freedom of choice to pimp out herself and it's non judgemental portrayal. But I see no empowerment in losing ones identity or scrambling for the likes and followers of virtual strangers that do not care who you really are but only what you can do for them while pretending to be what they want. It's a sad obsession to get lost in and a concept not alien to many these days....
The only way this film remotely works is by acknowledging that Lola has already taken over Alice's persona. The doppelganger is a metaphor for the loss Alice has already experienced in the loss of her self but it's a dull uneventful lack of thrills to arrive at all we see in the very beginning and Alice's lack of dimension doesn't thrive in the pink room either.
A very mediocre film for me lacking in suspense or thrills....
