Review of Calvary (2014) by Stephen B — 21 Apr 2014
Drawing inspiration from John Ford's passions - westerns and Ireland - McDonaghs's film can be seen partly as homage to that great director, but it has its own distinctiveness and stands tall as a complex and multi-layered modern morality tale.
Held together by a mesmerising performance from Brendan Gleeson, it is brutal and beautiful, a film touched by greatness.
