Review of Calvary (2014) by Imy B — 19 Jul 2014
How ironic that I should see the movie Calvary in the same week as the tragedy of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17. If anyone has doubts about their faith this film will certainly not give you any encouragement as to the existence of a supreme being.
It is probably the most cynical interpretation of religion in general, and Catholicism in particular, that I have ever seen but it is also immensely powerful and features a simply brilliant performance by Brendan Gleeson who plays the priest facing a variety of demons including his own.
This is not an easy movie in many ways but it is well worth the effort. Probably the best movie of the year for me so far and a five star tour de force from Gleeson.
