Review of Calvary (2014) by Kevin K — 04 Aug 2014
This one grabs the viewer right out of the gate with the opening scene, but sadly the rest of the movie levels off after the first 5 minutes and never becomes as great as it could have been.
Rather this dark and bleak view of the priesthood makes the viewer almost feel the texture of Ireland and endure the constant winds of cynicism that nearly drive Brendan Gleeson's faith away before securing him in a role that he knows he must play.
The acting was wonderful, and the directing was beautiful, but I couldn't get over the fact that a story with so much promise could prove to be just a slow and bleak unraveling on screen.
Worth a watch, but not another.
