Review of Calvary (2014) by Amilcar A — 16 Aug 2014
Calvary is an exceptional movie. It's smart, makes you think and can be both funny and remarkably traumatizing at the same time.
This is a story about catholic priest abuse, redemption, love and small town Ireland. There is plenty of beauty, folklore and brutality.
The plot is not complicated and intertwined. It's just as advertised and the movie unfolds with minor surprised but enough suspense to make you sit on the edge of the booth.
Brendan Gleeson give a marvelous performance and reminds us what a great actor he can be. Granted the role is a bit of a shoe in since he mostly plays himself but it's still phenomenal.
As usual, this is a film that 9 people will see and will get lost in the ocean of other crap. However if you like art house movies this is really as good as it gets.
