Review of Calvary (2014) by Andrew E — 22 Aug 2014
Arty but in a good way - fantastic scenery shots are quite literally scene stealing. Petulant, grimey view of Irish Catholicism is sometimes over the top and really hammed up by certain characters (I'm looking at you Adian Gillan).
The case of who dunnit (or more like who'll do it) will keep viewers guessing into the final act, but it's Gleeson who makes this film so watchable, rising high above some other notable irish actors, who are largely cartoony.
Well directed (in terms of scenes not necessarily acting), with a dramatic ending that will leave you satisfied even if you are not quite sure why.
