Review of Calvary (2014) by Reini U — 06 Sep 2014
2014 for the movies has been so far pretty much a disappointment for me. However, with the fall releases it seem to have picked up steam. Calvary, written and directed by John Michael McDonagh. Is one of the best movies of the year so far.
This film is well crafted and finely wrought. Brendon Gleeson is a marvel as the village priest of the small parish located somewhere on the Irish coast. It is populated with a host of motely Irish characters each a little bit odder than the last.
The movie opens (spoiler) with a parishioner, in the confessional, threatening to kill Father James. He gives the troubled priest a week to get his affairs in order. We have a jolly good time trying to figure out who it is.
The film is beautifully photographed, each scene a small masterpiece of detail, composition, and lighting.
