Review of Calvary (2014) by Kevin C — 13 Sep 2014
McDonagh and Gleeson's previous film The Guard was really funny but ran out of steam. With this I felt the laughs never really worked, but it was a more powerful, moving film.
I think Gleeson is always excellent, and this is a sublime performance of droll dignity and bemusement.
The rampant Irish cameos add little. I preferred the core story, and its exploration of family, mortality and abuses of the catholic church.
