Review of Calvary (2014) by Ian G — 10 Oct 2014
A pretty straightforward film with stunning cinematography of an Irish smalltown and its shoreline, and an always reliable performance by Brendan Gleeson focusing on his Priest character, dealing with an impending date with a supposed mysterious church patron who has chosen him to suffer his rage in one weeks time due to the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of a pedophile priest years earlier despite Brendan being a good clergymen albeit conflicted.
Its the hope Brendans murder will bring attention to the molestation cases that have plagued the Catholic church for years. By no means a bad film but it is interesting that the filmmakers simply chose to use the case to bookend the film and outside of the churchs arson and simply focusing on Brendan's character going about his daily routine and simply focusing on getting his affairs somewhat in order and trying to do the right thing before the inevitable encounter, as almost just to set up the list of possible suspects.
Have a feeling if they focused on the actual implementation of the murder in the first half of the film and the fall out for the second half might have been a more tinged engaged. Ok but could have been more.
