Review of Calvary (2014) by Ian H — 17 Jan 2015
Calvary ranks right up there with other great priest dramas like Bergman's Winter Light and Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest, but also brandishes some of the silliness of Father Ted. It makes for a film that is tonally strange with a blend of subtle menace, bleakness and pitch black, barely recognizable comedy all anchored by the tremendous warmth that Brendan Gleeson brings to his riveting portrayal of a good priest in a state of conflict.
