Review of Calvary (2014) by Gavin P — 01 Jun 2015
I really wanted to like this Irish black-comedy/drama better than I did - especially after Gleeson's efforts in 'The Guard'. It starts OK - the priest being told he will be killed in a week, so it's almost a reverse murder-mystery.
It has moments that are funny, mostly thanks to typical Irish quips and having O'Dowd & Moran in the cast, and you assume he will figure it out with whoever has an issue with him by the end. However, a few things happen in the final third - particularly with Bruno - that leave a sour taste.
Gleeson is great in it, as is the Irish scenery, but it falls short of being a fully-enjoyable film.
