Review of Calvary (2014) by Joshua H — 28 Jun 2015
The Premise of CALVARY is of a man mysteriously making a confession to a priest, Father James, that he is going to kill him in a week not because he's bad but because he's innocent as retribution for sex crimes perpetuated against him in his youth.
Father James is an honorable man who is trying to keep his faith in harsh times amongst congregation or derelicts and locals with questionable constitutions. The movie ask honest questions about being a person with integrity and faith in a world where that's a useless commodity, but fails to reconcile that. The movie also fails address how does a priest reconcile being part institution that perpetuates years of child rape. I wanted to like this movie as it's well done, but has a questionable sense of morality that's hard to suspend my disbelief.
