Review of Calvary (2014) by Simon T — 10 Jul 2015
It's being marketed as a black comedy. Although there are certainly comic moments, it's really a poetic investigation of conscience and the difficulties of being good. Gorgeously photographed, and with a fine elliptical screenplay by writer-director McDonagh, the film is taken to the next level by Brendan Gleeson's wonderful central performance.
Good work too from Dylan Moran, Chris O'Dowd and Pat Shortt. Only a couple of misjudged characterizations prevent it from being a masterpiece.
