Review of Calvary (2014) by Alex H — 31 Jul 2015
I'm a big fan of the "religious man who is also the voice of reason" archetype (Name of the Rose springs to mind but there are plenty o others), and Gleeson carries that role really well, with lots of shades of grey (UK spelling).
Starts out as a sorta portrait of a secluded parish, but unfolds into a pretty depressing tapestry of bitterness and resignation. Almost too stagey, but the nonlinearity of the editing keeps it from feeling too deliberate.
The script is a bit broad at times (suicidal daughter, flamboyant gay, a few lil tropes), and I coulda done without the sappy score, and I gotta knock it a half star for that shot of his co-father reading The God Delusion.
But it's still a beautiful little movie. De Bankole needs to be in more movies I see.
