Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Waltertsolley — 02 Feb 2018
Literate, well acted film about a summertime romance between Elio, the 17 year-old son of a professor, and Oliver, his father’s American associate, who is living with them while working toward his doctorate.
Intelligently written, a surprisingly forthright same sex love story. It avoids the standard gay romance cliches, and instead gives us a thoughtful, realistic (if somewhat idealized) movie about well developed and interesting characters.
Timothée Chalamet is astonishing in a breakout performance. But, I really loved the flawless supporting cast, especially Michael Stuhlbarg and Amira Casar as Elio’s loving parents. Wonderfully linear filmmaking, refreshingly unadorned, and never maudlin.
One of the year’s best.
