Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Grumpyreviewer — 15 Jan 2018
This is probably the most beautiful movie I have seen in years - in my life, perhaps. I find it hard to choose a bunch of words to explain how deep and heartbreaking this movie is... I feel this movie, deeply; but it's just hard to explain it all.
The buzz attracted me to it; sat down without much knowledge and by the end I had tears in my eyes and the feeling I had experienced something so unforgettable. This is a masterpiece, this is a work of art. The strong acting (Timothée Chalamet is a vision of melancholy and curiosity), the beautifully written script, the shots, the gorgeous direction by Luca Guadagnino, the music (the songs by Sufjan Stevens are haunting, dreamlike); the nostalgia of it all. I have lived moments in my life that passed, that are forever gone; but left their marks in me. And this is what this moving story is about. This is so much more than a "love story" between Elio and Oliver, a young boy and an older man who discover each other during a summer in Italy, in the 80s. It is about moments; memories, what we carry with us through the years, what is left in the past and how important events will change us forever.
"Call me by your name" needs to be seen, known, shared, celebrated.
