Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Michael J — 31 Dec 2017
Call Me By Your Name was an enjoyable film in a beautiful setting. One could almost sense the pastoral calm in the village and on the roads that were mostly devoid of cars. Timothee Chalamet is amazing as Elio, a 17 year old coming to terms with is sexuality.
Armie Hammer is OK, particularly for a character who obviously has not resolved his own conflicts about his sexuality. The seduction dance they they mutually perform with each other was well done, with neither wanting to face rejection and humiliation.
Oliver was not a particularly likable character because he seemed to need to stay in control of the relationship. He knew he had more power over a teen who was experiencing his first love, and he didn't fail to take advantage of it.
The most disappointing part of the movie was the ending which seemed a bit flat and predictable. One of the surprising delights was the credits. During the credits, you see the face of Elio staring into the fireplace and going through a series of emotions as he realizes the relationship is not to be.
Chalamet definitely deserves an Oscar nomination.
