Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Ivan W — 13 Jan 2018
TROLL ALERT -- The alt-right smear campaign against "Call Me By Your Name" is underway. Notice the strident tone and similarity of complaints in the sudden new burst of negative posts. Pedophilia is their chief charge and they can't even get the ages of the characters right. Oliver is 24. Elio is 17. The age of consent in Italy in 1983 was 14. Today it's 16. This charge has no merit whatsoever.
This onslaught of attacks is organized, targeted and designed to discredit the movie, you can be sure.
But they won't win. Homophobic bigots can't defeat a genuine work of art that explores and celebrates love. Love is fragile. But we who love and defend love when we see it aren't fragile. Organized haters always reveal themselves eventually. And peter out and run away when their phony "arguments" don't prevail, as they won't in this case.
Long live "Call Me By Your Name", and long may it prosper. A beacon of truth, a gloriously well made movie.
