Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Guillermo G — 20 Nov 2017
It is an extraordinary evocation of first love and adolescence, marvellous performances, particularly Hammer and Chalamet, who carry the film. But I would like to concentrate on one aspect of the negative reviews here, those who claim to be shocked/affronted by the age difference. Hammer was 30 at the time he made the film, Chalamet was 20. He/she who at 20 never felt sexually attracted to somebody 10 years older, is free to cast stones. He/she is wrong, but their mistake is understandable.
The rest should shut up. Hammer's age is never mentioned in the film, in the book they are 17 and 24.
Unfortunately, all this self-righteousness, as if Oliver in the film would be equivalent to Weinstein or Spacey, comes from people who seem to choke in their PCness, and desperation to show how much of their time they are. Grow up.
