Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Nicholas I — 03 Feb 2018
With expressive, subtle, and heartbreakingly transformative performances, Call Me by Your Name offers a languid and beguiling experience of undeniable attraction and first love. Words are replaced with expressions that expertly and honestly portray the conflicted thoughts and feelings of each character.
That is until words are needed, as evidenced in The Monologue to end all monologues. And the final scene offers such catharsis for those watching, set to a prime example of a soundtrack filled with enriched imagery.
This is a story of universal love, lustful desire, and the familial bonds that either strengthen or weaken our abilities to feel freely. And this movie deftly conveys each of these themes in a way that remains with you for long after the screen fades to black.
