Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Howard T — 31 Oct 2017
The book is my favorite of all time. When I heard they were making it into a film I was concerned; I didn't think the passion, love and almost desperation would translate well into film. It does; it translates beautifully.
Everything is near perfect; the acting, the locations, the direction, the long shots, the script, the music... everything . It's a film with no judgement and no hate. It's a film about pure love.
The film has had almost universal praise and rightly so. The only criticism, I have seen (and it's very little) is from those who do not agree with the age gap. 17-24 is not much of an age gap, and the 17yr old is the pursuer (and legal)! No one takes advantage of anyone in this film.
I hope it gets the audience it deserves. I still well up thinking about it; the film is beautifully devastating.
