Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Brian G — 09 Dec 2017
Of a myriad number of shots I could choose in Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name, the one that hit me the hardest was a tracking shot between the two leads and a WW1 statue. The camera resolves around the back of the movie's protagonist as he flirts with his father's graduate student after they have taken a long bike ride.
It puts in the viewer at the same perspective of the young man during his summer of self-discovery. The object of his affection is within reach but at the same time eludes him. It reflects on the joy, the sorrow, and the excitement of young love rarely depicted with such accuracy in the movies.
The speech the young man's father gives him at the end of the film brought me to tears. A remarkable feat of directing and acting. Highly recommended.
