Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Steve T — 22 Dec 2017
A really well done story about a love between two unlikely people. Set in 1983 Call Me By Your Name follows 17 year old Elio (Timothee Chalamet) who lives in Northern Italy with his professor father (Michael Stuhlbarg) and his mother (Amira Caser).
They must be some of the damn smartest people on the planet speaking 4 different languages and moving around depending on Elio's fathers research. During the summer Elio's father get's a new assistant to help him out (a sort of graduate student) named Oliver (Armie Hammer).
Oliver and Elio don't exactly hit it off right off the bat. Oliver comes off as very American and arrogant at times while Elio himself is kind of finding himself. Soon enough Elio makes a leap of faith and the two begin a romance during the summer connecting on many different levels.
The movie is extremely well done. It's a bit of a slow burn, but it had a great story to it all. There's a lot of themes here especially about realizing who you really are, the feelings of a first love and the importance of memories.
The films two leads are great here and really have a chemistry that grows over time. It's a film that I truthfully can relate to regardless of the sexual preference of the two leads and I believe a lot of people could relate to in the future.
It's a bit of a sad film overall that kind of thrusts itself right back into the viewer to remind ya of how life would have went back in 1983. It's a well done film and one that I recommend checking out especially for fans of indie films.
