Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Brad B — 14 Jan 2018
This movie is my favorite of the year. Can't remember the last time I was as moved by a film as much as this one did. It evokes nostalgia and yearning for what once was. The 80's are my wheelhouse so I'm sure that adds to my visceral reaction to this movie, but for anyone who has loved and lost, this movie will take you back in all its wonderful bittersweet glory.
Timothée Chalamet is fantastic as Elio, and his chemistry with Armee Hammer is genuine and lovely. Although their relationship is at the heart of the movie, the love of family and friends is just as important.
The monolgue of Mr Perlman is heartwrenching and beautiful, and everyone should be so lucky as Elio to have his parents' unconditional love. This is a quiet movie that lets the summer roll along sweetly as well as the romance.
It is, to me, one of the most romantic movies I've ever seen. The charming sophistication of Elio wrapped up in a sweet awakening of his love for Oliver is a thing of beauty. I will have to read the book upon which the book is based.
Loved.
