Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Sherry C — 13 Apr 2018
I always try to catch the Oscar nominated films before the TV ceremony, but didn't see this movie till just last night "on demand."I so wanted to love it because of all the hype it got, and because of the scenes shown during the ceremony.
I can't even tell you how disappointed I was!! This was a gorgeously shot film, but that's all. It was ploddingly tedious! I kept waiting for something (besides sex) to actually happen. I realize that this is a coming of age, self-discovery movie, but the characters were just not that interesting or really fleshed out.
You knew very little about them. The most disappointing aspect was that the lead actors had very little chemistry. The worst thing was that although Timothee Chalament did a credible job, the wooden Armie Hammer was woefully miscast.
He was simply too old to play that character. He looked like he was in his 30's and it was extremely uncomfortable to watch him and his teenage co-star in the sex scenes. It was creepy and felt so pervy! Ugh.
It was like watching a kid get molested. No thank you. The grad student should have looked like a grad student- 21 or 22. That would have been fine...although the movie would probably still be as boring.
.. and at 2 hours and 12 minutes--way way too long I just can't. It got 2.
