Review of Caligula (1979) by Thescarlatescu R — 11 Mar 2010
Oooh , this movie , it had potential that was blown with bad taste sexploitation , though , unlike most people , I liked it , I found , alot of what it was trying to do very well done , how the emperor in the palace at the start talks of how he leads an empire of lust & violence , something shown in the mise en scene , the orgy like visuals then turn into grotesque imagery showing what they are like deep down , & that is also present in the modern world , so for some on too say that it isnt art its just an excuse for sex , is too a certain extent wrong , though , to a certain extent correct also.
Malcom McDowell is used to playing controversial roles & lets be honest this is probably his most controversial (if not Alex DeLarge in Clockwork Orange) but he does a great job , completely unsympathetic & ruthless yet paranoid & weak.
This movie had a lot of potential like I said , alot is wasted , but at the same time there is alot to take from watching this.
Give it a chance you may like it (or be disgusted & never trust my reviews again).
