Review of Caligula (1979) by Carmelo V — 27 Nov 2010
The movie is frankly NOT as bad as it is made to be. You have to be willing to watch a lot of XXX level pornography and extreme violence including mutilations (on the uncut version). The film however is rather realistic when it comes to portraying the Roman Empire and its crude/gory nature. Whereas a movie like Gladiator doesn't come even close this one does portray how Romans truly were.
For the film itself; McDowell's performance is rather interesting and the movie is well made. It has astounding scenery for a low-budget film and superb acting and story for a porn-like flick. Although I would not refer to this movie as porn but rather a Hollywood movie with XXX rating :).
Objectively speaking it is better than the majority of classical Roman/Greek Empire movies.
It is much better than: Gladiator, Troy, Spartacus, 300 and Nero. Though it falls short of Ben Hur.
