Review of Caligula (1979) by Sarah M — 18 Dec 2010
Saw the edited version of the film, which I understand is perhaps the more gracious way to see the film. in light of that, I will not attempt to adjust for the uncut version and stick to the one I saw.
Is the film ridiculous? certainly. none of these characters is the least bit within my realm of understanding, not to mention that I have a general aversion to films set in ancient rome (there are, of course, a few exceptions to this rule). its a little sad, considering the talent that is in it. caligula basically devolves into a regular tale of an infantile and tyrannical ruler.
