Review of Caligula (1979) by Dave M — 03 Oct 2012
A sickening multi-million dollar mixture of hard core pornography and gore amid over the top performances, and corny dramatics by a magnificent star-studded cast that includes Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O' Toole, and Sir John Gielgud.
It tells the tale of the insane Emperor Caligula and his sadistic and murderous rein over Rome. Malcolm McDowell who's amusingly campy portrayal of the demented Employer Caligula is the best thing about this totally worthless picture.
The film has impressive opulent sets that allegedly depict ancient Rome. Produced by the late Bob Guccione, who was told by the late great writer Gore Vidal who wrote the screenplay, to remove his name from the credits of this production.
There is not one thing of redeeming value in this turkey. There are shocking scenes of emasculation, evisceration, rape, bestiality, necrophilia, incest, sadomasochism, lesbianism, this is suppose to be entertainment? An over long bore, and an excruciating experience into bad cinema.
