Review of Caligula (1979) by Caleb S — 11 Nov 2007
This has to be the strangest movie I have ever seen. I always used to wonder why people had so much trouble showing sex in films...NC-17 is there for a reason. But what this film has shown me is very odd indeed.
It seems that once sex is allowed to occur it finds a way of becoming the center of attention...you can't take your eyes off of it. However, it kinda' works in favour of Caligula in such as this film is literally about corruption, and in some strange way the visual of the extreme sexual act pulls our attention.
..sways us into a world of "false belief". By the middle of the film we the audience have been left corrupted in our seats...I've always been okay with the idea of Vulgarity in film. I think it's important that a person can tell the story they want to tell the way they want to tell it.
And I think the audience deserves not to be lied to. That said, I actually felt a little sickened by the nudety after a while...I didn't care to see it. But perhaps this is the point of the film. And in that respect it is a terrific success.
