Review of Caligula (1979) by Annette F — 04 Feb 2008
I've never seen the edited version, but i'm interested to. the unedited version is just one big murder-porno, which I think takes away from whatever actual storyline there might have been. I would have liked to have seen more focus on caligula's mental deterioration, but not the way they presented it.
However, I do think malcolm mcdowell did an amazing job. after seeing clockwork orange, I don't know who else could have done this role as well. IMDB says if you like this movie, you might also like "irreversible" (which I love), "ichi the killer" (which I hate) and "salo" (which i've been wanting to see). I really wonder how they picked those movies... as I don't think they have anything to do with caligula. perhaps they assume people only liked this movie for its sex and violence. if that's the case, the movie completely failed in its attempts.
