Review of Caligula (1979) by Dave A — 28 Jun 2008
(Do NOT watch the edited version; not only is nudity and porn edited out, so is much of the plot leaving an incoherent mess...).
As has often been pointed out; it could only have happened in the 70's... Tinto Brass's cut already had excessive nudity for a film with so many big stars, and then Penthouse founder Bob Guccionne inserted a few hardcore scenes here and there....
While admittedly there's a lesbian scene which is entirely superfluous to the plot, on the whole the excessive sexuality in the film is entirely contextually relevant; after all, the film is about Rome's most infamous Caesar, and a completely sexually charged depraved and decadent lifestyle. Malcom McDowell is just as good as he is in If... and A CLockwork Orange. This film is unfairly maligned...
