Review of Caligula (1979) by Dr. A — 09 Nov 2009
This is not a moralistic opinion in any way, be sure of that but this was just not good and an embarrassment for the star studded cast (I'm not putting McDowell in this group) ... I saw the original cut and it was not good. Even though it was written by Gore Vidal it does not mean it's a good story. It's too far fetched. Most of it is not even remotely close to what was, but what can one expect from a soft core director as Tinto Brass, who bet was in his element when Penthouse came to him with this awful and boring movie.
I'm quite surprised to have seen Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole and John Gielgud, such fine actors in a smutty skin flick with no context what so ever except of course the orgies and whatnot.
Just because human beings have an inclination towards watching the morbid and obscene doesn't mean AT ALL that they should stick around for a 2:37 hrs movie with no story. I I wanted to see a porn I'd just go for one straight on.
This movie will likely be enjoyed by anyone with the urge to watch a porn but with an excuse that he or she is renting an art flick instead of a skin flick.
The only reason I give it a full star rating is because of the quirky scene of the decapitating machine... that's all.
Claudius portrayed as a homosexual? please...
