Yes it's trashy and the extended porn inserts are really, really unnecessary but the graphic gore and general nudity do work in context with the subject matter. It's not a good film and I completely understand why it is reviled (perhaps the historical biography+gore+porn was just too much for most) but so help me god I didn't mind this.
