Review of California Dreamin' (2007) by Cem Ü — 09 Aug 2007
Beautiful Rumanian film whose director apparently died before the final cut. Heavily political, though in the most subtlest way possible, it delivers the message laying bare the fragile superegos of each character; a superego whose judgement and pressure on the individual is suspended by a bureaucratic bottleneck.
Which in effect, means the superego cancels itself in the moment of cross-cultural interaction. The tension is beautifully arranged through stable and handheld camera action. A bit long, but it never makes you weary.
